In the midst of an election that remains too close to call, the importance of on-the-ground reporting is paramount.

The candidates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, are vying for the support of the American people, and it is the role of journalists to convey the unfolding narrative.

The Independent, a trusted news source for 27 million Americans spanning the political spectrum, is committed to this task. Unlike many other reputable news outlets, The Independent refrains from implementing paywalls, ensuring that its reporting and analysis remain accessible. However, quality journalism necessitates funding. The support of readers is instrumental in shedding light on these critical stories.

According to The Independent, a recent interview on ABC's This Week saw Senator Lindsey Graham defending former President Donald Trump against comments made by his former White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly. Kelly, who served under Trump, claimed that the former president had praised Adolf Hitler's leadership and the loyalty of his generals. Graham, however, dismissed this as an "opinion," despite Kelly's respected position.

"He's entitled to his opinion, I just categorically reject it,” Graham stated. “He was a strong leader on the things that matter the most…He's not a fascist. He's not Hitler."

Graham further defended Trump by highlighting his support for Israel, a stance that starkly contrasts with Hitler's genocidal policies. "Donald Trump is the most popular politician from the West because he stood by the state of Israel,” Graham said. “Hitler wanted to kill all the Jews!”

However, Jonathan Karl, the interviewer, clarified that neither Kelly nor other Trump administration officials who corroborated Kelly's claim were labeling Trump as "Hitler." Instead, they were commenting on Trump's alleged "fascist" tendencies. Karl argued that these tendencies towards authoritarianism would not be negated by Trump's political support for Israel.

"They didn't call him Hitler," Karl told the senator.

Graham responded, "What they did is they're trying to scare Americans that this man can't fix the problems we need fixed. I don't think he's a fascist. I thought he was a very strong president at a time we needed a strong president."

This controversy unfolds as Kamala Harris, Trump's opponent, is actively seeking the support of disenchanted Republicans. She is being aided by Liz Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and other Republican endorsers who are calling for their party to distance itself from Trumpism in this election cycle.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to challenge Harris in the polls, seemingly attempting to fracture key Democratic constituencies in swing states. For instance, in Michigan, Republicans funded by Trump ally Elon Musk are running a coordinated ad campaign aimed at dampening voter enthusiasm among the state’s significant Arab American and Muslim populations.

With polling data indicating a tight race across numerous states, it is clear that both sides will need to mobilize their most loyal voters on November 5 to remain competitive. The role of quality journalism in informing the electorate and fostering informed decision-making is more critical than ever.
