Aurora, Colorado, city officials have been accused of downplaying the escalating threat posed by the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA), despite receiving early warnings.

This claim is supported by a series of emails obtained by Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky, which she recently shared with the public.

According to The Blaze, Jurinsky posted an internal Aurora Police Department email dated November 16, 2023, on social media. The email, penned by Gang Intervention Unit Officer Matthew Walters, was addressed to Chief of Police Chris Poppe and several other colleagues. Walters' email contained a stark warning: "The liberal media and some politicians want you to believe that it is okay for people to live like this because it's just a handful of apartment complexes and not the entire city of Aurora."

Walters' email also included a "Gang Unit Bulletin" on TdA, which he intended to distribute department-wide the following day. The bulletin contained information provided by a Homeland Security Investigations sergeant and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. According to Walters, the ICE officer revealed that TdA had chosen Denver as their headquarters due to the city's sanctuary policies and strategic location.

In response to Walters' email, Chief Poppe inquired about any Aurora-specific information that could be included in the bulletin, such as known addresses, hangouts, or other details that officers should be aware of.

Jurinsky also disclosed a department email from June 30, detailing an incident at the Whispering Pines Apartments, owned by CBZ Management. The email revealed that a cleaning crew worker was threatened by a group of Venezuelans demanding keys to vacant apartments in the complex. The suspects reportedly warned the worker to comply or face lethal consequences for herself and her family. They also claimed to have the building under surveillance and boasted of having over 200 people working for them.

In a separate email, Major Crime Homicide Unit Sergeant Jeff Longnecker expressed his frustration over the lack of inter-agency cooperation in investigating TdA. He warned that the situation could escalate if an innocent person were to be killed, leading to potential exposure for the department's lack of information sharing and proactive measures.

Jurinsky criticized city leaders for their apparent dismissal of the severity of the situation. She questioned the threshold for these 'leaders' to care, given that the issue extends beyond a few apartment complexes.

CBZ Management also expressed their frustration, claiming that the police were aware of TdA's activities as early as September 22, 2023, but failed to warn them. They accused the police of placing the burden of security on their employees without informing them of the danger.

City of Aurora spokesperson, Ryan Luby, defended the city's actions, stating that police departments and the justice system must rely on admissible evidence, not hearsay, rumors, and fragments of information. He also accused CBZ Management of employing diversionary tactics and fighting the city's enforcement of city code.

The governor's office also clarified that they were first notified of the situation in Aurora by Homeland Security in late July and immediately offered assistance to the city. However, they were informed that the city did not yet have a strong criminal case against the gang.
