Kim Kardashian, the reality TV star turned criminal justice reform advocate, has urged the Los Angeles District Attorney's office to rectify what she perceives as an injustice done to the Menendez brothers.

The siblings, convicted of the 1986 murder of their parents, were recently granted a hearing on November 29 to review new evidence.

According to The Decider, Kardashian's visit to the brothers in prison, alongside Cooper Koch, star of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and her exposure to Ryan Murphy's Netflix series, have significantly influenced her perspective on the case. She expressed her belief that the brothers were denied a fair second trial and that the District Attorney's office should correct their past mistakes.

"I think that they never got a fair second trial and I feel like ever since, for me, watching Ryan Murphy’s Monsters show it really opened up and showed me so much about abuse," Kardashian shared with Variety at the Academy Museum Gala. She further emphasized, "The DA’s office really should right the wrong that they did many years ago. It doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have done time. It just means that I really believe that they deserve a second chance and they’ve done enough time.”

Erik and Lyle Menendez were handed life sentences without parole in 1996, following their conviction for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The brothers have consistently maintained that the murder was a response to years of sexual abuse by their father.

Kardashian, reflecting on the length of their sentence, stated, “The sentence that they’ve had, they’ve been in it for almost 35 years. That’s more than a first-degree murder charge. I am someone who believes in second chances and I really believe in them.”

Following her visit to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Kardashian penned an essay for NBC News. She highlighted that "much of the abuse evidence was deemed inadmissible" during their second trial, which she believes deprived the jurors of critical evidence.

Despite her recent praise for Murphy's Netflix series, Kardashian's essay criticized the media's sensationalization of the brothers during their trial. She wrote, “Erik and Lyle’s case became entertainment for the nation… There was no room for empathy, let alone sympathy.”

Cooper Koch, who portrayed Lyle in Monsters, expressed his excitement about the possibility of the brothers' release. However, he stated his disinterest in reprising his role if the opportunity arose to film additional episodes following their potential release.

Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Brothers has faced backlash for its portrayal of the brothers and the abuse they allegedly endured. The brothers themselves have labeled the show as "disheartening slander."

Ryan Murphy, however, seems to support the idea of the brothers receiving a new hearing. He stated, “Like [Kim Kardashian], I don’t think anyone should be thrown away forever. But I know not everyone thinks that. It’s complicated.” This statement underscores the complexity and controversy surrounding the Menendez brothers' case, and the ongoing debate about justice, punishment, and the possibility of redemption.
