Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, recently unveiled his fleet of Optimus robots, priced at $30,000 each.

These humanoid machines, designed to assist with domestic tasks, have left spectators both awestruck and apprehensive, with many drawing parallels to the dystopian future portrayed in the science fiction film, I, Robot.

According to the Daily Mail, the robots were displayed in a captivating demonstration where they marched in single file across a stage, leaving onlookers astounded. Musk invited attendees to interact with the Optimus robots, which were programmed to perform tasks such as serving drinks. "At scale, you should be able to buy an Optimus robot for $20,000 to $30,000," Musk stated. He further elaborated on the robot's capabilities, saying, "It can walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries, just be your friend."

The demonstration also featured the humanoid robot engaging in family activities, such as sitting at a dining table and playing with a child, as well as performing household chores like cleaning kitchen surfaces and collecting mail. The Optimus robot, intended for both industrial and domestic use, was first announced at AI Day in August 2021 and made its debut on September 30.

In an essay published in China Cyberspace magazine, Musk wrote, "Tesla Bots are initially positioned to replace people in repetitive, boring, and dangerous tasks. But the vision is for them to serve millions of households, such as cooking, mowing lawns, and caring for the elderly."

However, the unveiling of Musk's robots has sparked a wave of unease among social media users, with many drawing comparisons to the 2004 Sci-fi movie I, Robot. The film, set in 2035, depicts a world where highly intelligent robots fill public service positions, operating under three laws designed to protect humans. However, the plot thickens when a detective investigates the suspicious death of a leading robotics scientist, uncovering a larger threat to humanity.

Several viewers expressed their concerns in the comments section beneath the clip of Musk's robots. "Am I the only one who remembers iRobot?" questioned one user. "iRobot just became reality," warned another, while a third called for the fictional detective from the movie, saying, "Somebody call Detective Spooner! I’m getting i, Robot chills."

Musk, in 2022, explained that the android, which will have human-like limbs and features, was deliberately designed that way. "The Tesla Bot is close to the height and weight of an adult, can carry or pick up heavy objects, walk fast in small steps, and the screen on its face is an interactive interface for communication with people," he said. He further justified the humanoid design by stating, "Because human society is based on the interaction of a bipedal humanoid with two arms and ten fingers. So if we want a robot to adapt to its environment and be able to do what humans do, it has to be roughly the same size, shape, and capabilities as a human."

The Tesla bot, standing at 5'8 and weighing 125 pounds, will incorporate the Autopilot computer used in Tesla's electric cars. This will enable the robot to recognize real-world objects, although it will have its own customized sensors and actuators. It will also have the capacity to 'deadlift' up to 150 pounds, carry 45 pounds, walk 5 miles per hour, and possess human-like hands and visual sensors, giving it the ability to 'see.'

However, Musk's enthusiasm for AI is tempered by a note of caution. Just six months ago, he warned of a potential robot uprising, claiming that AI could surpass human intelligence as early as next year. In an interview, Musk stated that AI would become more intelligent than the smartest human within two years and predicted that 'sentient' AIs would outnumber humans within five years. His claims are based on the observation that an exponential amount of computing power is being dedicated to AI projects each year. "AI is the fastest advancing technology I've seen of any kind, and I've seen a lot of technology," Musk said. "AI hardware and computers that are coming online dedicated to AI are increasing by a factor of 10 every year, if not every 6-9 months."

As the world marvels at the unveiling of Musk's Optimus robots, the question remains: Are we on the brink of a future where robots are an integral part of our daily lives, or are we stepping into a dystopian reality reminiscent of I, Robot? Only time will tell.
