The review highlighted a series of alarming malfunctions, ranging from automatic braking to cruise control, echoing the concerns raised by social media users since the vehicle's debut in November 2023.
According to the Daily Mail, the review confirmed the complaints of poor visibility and the rusting of the truck's stainless steel exterior when exposed to the elements. However, the most alarming revelations were the potentially dangerous flaws in key safety features. A test driver was alerted to the inoperability of the vehicle's traction control, electronic stability control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning system, and cruise control within just two weeks of ownership.

These features, with the exception of cruise control, have been standard in sedans, SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks since 2012. The Department of Transportation estimates that electronic stability control systems, which automatically detect and correct erratic driving, saved over 7,000 lives from 2011 to 2015. Furthermore, the latest data suggest that lane departure warning systems have reduced crashes involving lane swerving by 11 percent.

The review by Consumer Reports also highlighted the Cybertruck's 'abysmal' visibility. "With the exception of the straight-ahead view out the windshield, the Cybertruck's visibility is abysmal," the review stated. "Look to the left or right and your view will be blocked by thick pillars surrounding the windshield." The review also noted that the buttresses framing the bed create 'large blind spots to the sides,' and the automated bed cover obscures the rear window when closed.

The review also shed light on the driving experience of the Cybertruck, the first vehicle sold in the US with drive-by-wire steering. This system, which replaces mechanical linkages between the steering wheel and the tires with electronic sensors, is intended to make steering more responsive and require less effort from the driver. However, the review noted that at low speeds, a slight turn of the steering wheel has the same effect as a larger turn in a conventional car, making it easy to clip a curb or cross a line.

The review also criticized the 50-inch-long single windshield wiper, which sometimes activates unintentionally in clear weather, creating a loud and somewhat alarming experience. The regenerative braking, standard in almost all electric vehicles, also stopped working for the tested Cybertruck.
The review also pointed out that the auto pilot and full-self driving, two key selling points of the Cybertruck, were not enabled even though the Consumer Reports team paid for the subscription. This comes amidst concerns about the Cybertruck's construction method. Road safety campaigners in Europe have argued that the vehicle should be banned due to its 'sharp edges' leading to 'increased rates of injury and death,' as reported by The Telegraph.

Despite these criticisms, the review did acknowledge some positive aspects of the Cybertruck. It was praised for its agility on twisty roads and its quick acceleration. When 'beast mode' is turned on, the Cybertruck can reportedly go from 0 to 60mph in 2.6 seconds, rivaling some supercars. The comfort of the Cybertruck was also commended, with the front seats described as having 'good support and padding,' and the rear seats as 'some of the most comfortable we've ever experienced in a pickup.'

However, these features come at a steep price, with the Cybertruck costing anywhere from around $80,000 to over $100,000. As the debate over the Cybertruck's merits and demerits continues, potential buyers will have to weigh the benefits against the reported flaws and decide whether this futuristic vehicle is worth the investment.
