This move disrupts a tradition that has seen presidential candidates participate in election specials on the show for several decades. CBS News had previously announced that both Trump and Vice President Harris had consented to separate one-on-one interviews for this year's special. However, Trump appears to have had a change of heart.
At a press conference on the night of October 1, Trump explained his decision, referring to his previous encounter with CBS anchor Lesley Stahl in 2020, which he prematurely ended. "They came to me and would like me to do an interview, but first, I want to get an apology because the last time I did an interview with them, if you remember, they challenged me on the computer," Trump stated. He continued, "They said the laptop from hell was from Russia. And I said, ‘It wasn’t from Russia, it was from Hunter [Biden].’ And I never got an apology, so I’m sort of waiting. I’d love to do ’60 Minutes’, I do everything.”

The Trump campaign, in a statement, clarified that the former President had not officially agreed to an interview, but had merely entertained the idea. Meanwhile, "60 Minutes" has confirmed that the special will proceed as planned, regardless of Trump's withdrawal. "Our election special will broadcast the Harris interview on Monday as planned," the statement read. "Our original invitation to former President Donald Trump to be interviewed on ’60 Minutes’ stands.”
