The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the Biden administration, has recently unveiled its strategic plan for 2022-2026, which outlines three "ambitious goals."

This comes as the death toll from Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, exceeds 100. The storm, which initially hit Florida, has since wreaked havoc across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee, claiming at least 120 lives, as reported by the New York Post.

According to the Daily Caller, FEMA, the federal body tasked with managing the response to hurricanes, has traditionally emphasized equity and community. The agency believes that this focus will aid in "addressing the increasing range and complexity of disasters" within diverse communities, as stated in the strategic plan.

The plan's goals are comprehensive and long-term, designed to adapt to our evolving circumstances. "While some activities in this plan can be quickly realized, some will require efforts through 2026," the agency's website explains. The three bold objectives outlined are intended to equip FEMA to handle the growing diversity and complexity of disasters, meet the needs of the various communities it serves, and match the rising expectations of the emergency management community.

The first goal is to "instill equity as a foundation of emergency management," the second to "lead the whole community in climate resilience," and the third to "promote and sustain a ready FEMA and a prepared nation."

However, FEMA's approach has not been without criticism. As cities like Asheville, North Carolina, grapple with the aftermath of flooding, social media users have questioned the agency's lack of assistance. Journalist Nick Sorto, for instance, criticized both the Biden administration and FEMA while aiding in the storm's recovery efforts.

FEMA also faced backlash in August 2023 for conducting employee training on "white supremacy" while over 1,000 Hawaiians were unaccounted for following the devastating Maui wildfires, as reported by The Washington Free Beacon. The agency reportedly mandated a three-hour diversity training for its employees, arguing that white supremacy is "ingrained in nearly every system and institution in the U.S."

The wildfires on August 8, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 102 people and damaged over 3,000 structures in Lahaina. FEMA has yet to respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation's request for comment on these matters.
