The rapid progression of China in the realm of "humanoid robots" is sounding alarm bells in the United States, with fears mounting over potential threats to American privacy and the nation's technological edge on the global stage, warns a senator.

According to Newsweek, Beijing is fast-tracking its efforts to produce robots with personal, industrial, and military applications. This technological leapfrogging over the U.S. has sparked apprehensions about the potential misuse of these robots for espionage, commercial disruption, and other harmful activities.

The call to action is clear: "Congress must act to prevent products manufactured by adversarial regimes, especially China, from infiltrating our businesses, schools, communities and homes," a recent op-ed stated. "Better yet, we must position the U.S. as a global leader in the field."

The op-ed, penned by technology expert Jacob Helberg and Alabama Senator Katie Britt, referenced recent remarks by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Musk suggested that the pace of humanoid technology development in the U.S. is such that it will soon "be odd not to have a robot buddy, your C-3PO or R2-D2."

However, the vision of Chinese leader Xi Jinping is far from benign. China is aiming for dominance in the advanced technology sector and already holds the title of the world's largest market for robot installations, as reported by the International Federation of Robotics. Despite trailing Japan in robot production, China's aggressive government subsidies and cost-effective "inhuman labor practices" could enable the mass production of humanoid robots by 2025.

The authors warn that these robots pose a threat to U.S. economic competitiveness, given the growth potential of this nascent industry. If these robots reach American consumers, they "threaten Americans' personal security because of the data they collect." The authors caution, "These robots will take in limitless information about their surroundings, including any person with whom they interact."

The potential use of these robots in U.S. factories also implies that America's economic prosperity will be tied "to the goodwill of the Communist Party." Moreover, if the U.S. lags in developing such technology, its troops may "face fatal disadvantages on the battlefield," given China's efforts to integrate humanoid robots into its military.

The authors propose a solution: "procure and develop this technology independent from China." Steps toward this goal have already been taken, as seen in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act. To disentangle its military arsenal from Chinese manufacturing, Congress has prohibited the U.S. and its contractors from "using logistics systems owned or operated by the People's Republic of China," and from purchasing drones from the country "except in certain circumstances."

Helberg and Britt argue for a similar restriction on Chinese humanoids. They urge Congress to "ban the importation of Chinese humanoids and ensure that no American technology can support their creation before Xi Jinping has his own robotic army on American soil." This is a crucial step in safeguarding American interests and maintaining the nation's technological leadership.
