The private aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company has sent a letter to Congress, contesting the FAA's proposed fines.
According to The Post Millennial, the FAA had earlier this week announced its intention to impose a hefty fine of $630,000 on SpaceX. The penalty comes in response to the company's alleged violation of regulations during two launches in 2023. However, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has vehemently denied these allegations, stating that his company would be "filing suit against the FAA for regulatory overreach."

Musk has been vocal in his criticism of the FAA, accusing the agency of focusing on trivial issues rather than addressing genuine safety concerns. He stated that the agency’s “leadership spends their resources attacking SpaceX for petty matters that have nothing to do with safety, while neglecting real safety issues at Boeing. This is deeply wrong and puts human lives at risk.”

The SpaceX CEO also drew attention to the plight of two astronauts stranded aboard the International Space Station. He criticized NASA for declaring “the Boeing capsule unsafe for astronaut return, turning, out of necessity, to SpaceX, yet instead of fining Boeing for putting astronauts at risk, the FAA is fining SpaceX for trivia! Enough is enough.”

The FAA's allegations against SpaceX include the company's use of a propellant farm and an updated Communications Plan, both of which had not been approved by the FAA. The agency also claimed that SpaceX "did not conduct a launch poll two hours prior to a launch."

In its letter to Congress, SpaceX categorically denied these allegations. The letter, addressed to the chair and ranking member of both the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, stated that the company "forcefully rejects the FAA's assertion that it violated any regulations."

The letter also criticized the FAA for allegedly hindering the growth of the commercial space industry. David Harris, SpaceX's Vice President for legal, wrote, "For well over a year now, SpaceX has voiced its concerns with the FAA's inability to keep pace with the commercial space industry and the needs of U.S. Government agencies that rely on commercial space launch capability for national security and national priorities.” This ongoing dispute underscores the tension between private space companies and regulatory bodies, and raises questions about the future of commercial space travel.
