Hillary Clinton, in a recent appearance on MSNBC, expressed her belief that Americans who disseminate "misinformation" and Russian propaganda should face legal consequences.

Speaking with Rachel Maddow, Clinton discussed the recent Justice Department indictment of several alleged Kremlin-run websites and Russian state media employees. She emphasized the importance of indicting Russians who meddle in American elections, but also pointed out that there are Americans "engaged in this kind of propaganda". She suggested that if these individuals faced civil or criminal charges, it would serve as "a better deterrent" since it's unlikely that any Russians will ever stand trial in the United States.

According to The Federalist, Clinton's stance is fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment. The freedom of speech allows Americans to disseminate as much Russian propaganda as they wish, regardless of whether they believe in it or not. The term "misinformation" is not a concrete concept, but rather a Soviet term related to psychological warfare. When Clinton and other Democrats use these terms, they are often referring to facts and opinions they find disagreeable.

However, if we were to follow Clinton's line of thinking and start prosecuting American citizens for spreading Russian propaganda, Clinton herself would be the first to face charges. The argument here is that no one has done more to interfere in American elections by spreading Russian propaganda than Hillary Clinton herself. She is arguably the greatest disseminator of Russian propaganda and lies in American history, and thus, she should be the first to stand trial under these new rules she proposes.

The Clinton campaign is credited with creating the Trump-Russia collusion conspiracy, which significantly hindered the incoming Trump administration and held the nation in suspense for over two years. After 2,800 subpoenas, 500 witness interviews, and nearly 300 wiretaps and pen registers, Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded that there was no evidence of collusion by Trump or his associates.

Despite the lack of evidence linking Trump to Russia, there is a plethora of evidence suggesting Clinton's collusion. It was her campaign that hired Fusion GPS in April 2016 to conduct opposition research on Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee at the time. Fusion GPS was also working on behalf of Prevezon, a company owned by Kremlin-connected Russian oligarch Denis Katsyv, in the company's battle with U.S. prosecutors over Magnitsky Act sanctions. After the Clinton campaign and the DNC retained Fusion GPS, the firm hired Christopher Steele, a former British spy, to dig up dirt on any possible connections between Trump and Russia. These campaign expenditures to Fusion GPS were never disclosed by the Clinton campaign.

The reports and memoranda that Steele produced and circulated to the media and the FBI, known as the Steele dossier, were eventually thoroughly debunked and discredited. However, they served the political purpose of insinuating to the media and the FBI that Moscow had compromising information on Trump, who was allegedly a secret agent of the Kremlin.

The dossier ignited a media frenzy after it was briefed to president-elect Trump in January 2017 and then published by Buzzfeed. At the time, it seemed that there were some real connections between Trump and Russia, but in reality, the connections were all on Clinton’s side. Steele had his own Russian benefactor, Oleg Deripaska, whom Steele referred to as “our favorite business tycoon.” Despite being barred by sanctions from traveling to the U.S., Steele attempted several times to broker a meeting between Deripaska and the Obama administration’s Justice Department.

The Clinton campaign's collusion with Russia deepens further. The Russian attorney for Prevezon, the Russian company Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson worked for directly, was a woman named Natasha Veselnitskaya. She set up a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Jared Kushner and Donald Trump, Jr., that was touted as evidence the Trump campaign was colluding with corrupt Russian officials. In that meeting, Veselnitskaya promised to provide “dirt” on Clinton to the Trump campaign, but the information itself was actually produced by Fusion GPS.

The connections and collusion between the Clinton campaign and Russia are extensive and damning. If we were to start prosecuting Americans for spreading Russian propaganda, the first person to face charges should arguably be Hillary Clinton.
