This comes in the wake of House Republicans' attempt to append the bill to a spending package intended to finance the government until March 2025. The SAVE Act is designed to mandate proof of citizenship as a prerequisite for voting.
According to The Post Millennial, the White House issued a statement on the SAVE Act, stating, "The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections—it is a federal crime punishable by prison and fines." This, however, does not imply that voter registration necessitates proof of citizenship.

The Biden-Harris administration argues that the proposed measure is redundant, asserting that states "already have effective safeguards in place to verify voters’ eligibility and maintain the accuracy of voter rolls."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre further criticized the Republican proposal on Monday, dismissing it as "not a solution" for the Fiscal Year 2025 funding. She characterized the proposal as a "partisan poison bill," suggesting that Democrats are the ones open to bipartisan cooperation. Jean-Pierre urged Republicans to collaborate with Democrats to pass a “short-term CR” or continuing resolution.

Contrary to the stance of the Biden-Harris administration and the Democrats, a McLaughlin & Associates poll conducted earlier this year revealed that over 86 percent of Americans concur with the statement "proof of United States citizenship should be required to register to vote in American elections."

The White House, in its written statement, affirmed that Biden "will continue fighting to protect Americans’ sacred right to vote in free, fair, and secure elections." The administration further challenged House Republicans, stating that "if House Republicans really want to do something about securing our border and fixing our broken immigration system, they should vote on the border deal that the President negotiated with a bipartisan group of Senators."
The border bill, negotiated earlier this year, was reported to potentially admit at least 1.4 million illegal immigrants annually. If passed in Congress and signed by the President, this bill would enshrine this provision into law.
