According to Bob Hoge of RedState, these changes are attempts to present a more moderate image to voters, while concealing her commitment to radical progressivism.
During the interview, Sanders was asked whether he believed Harris was abandoning her progressive ideals. The question arose due to her recent changes in stance on issues such as Medicare for All and fracking, which she previously supported but now opposes. Sanders responded, "No, I don't think she's abandoning her ideals. I think she's trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election."

Hoge interprets Sanders' response as an admission that Harris is willing to do whatever it takes to win, even if it means hiding her true intentions. He also suggests that despite her attempts to appear more moderate, Harris' record reveals her true progressive nature.

Sanders also discussed his own democratic socialist ideals during the interview, including his support for massive taxes and corporate penalties. He acknowledged that while Harris aligns with him to some degree, he wishes she were more left-leaning. He said, "Look, she and I – she is not where I am. But I think, for example, when she talks about making the child tax credit permanent... that's a big deal because we have a major housing crisis in America."

Hoge concludes his opinion editorial by suggesting that Harris' policy flip-flops and attempts to appeal to all voters reveal her true nature as a progressive. He warns that her approach could lead to the rest of the nation following the path of her home state of California, where she served as attorney general and senator, and San Francisco, where she was district attorney. Despite her attempts to posture as a moderate, Hoge argues, her progressive roots remain evident.
