His decision stems from what he perceives as an increasing anti-Jewish sentiment within the party, as well as the recent Democratic National Convention that saw Vice President Kamala Harris rise as the party's presidential nominee.
As reported by Fox News, Dershowitz expressed his concerns during a conversation with radio host Zev Brenner on "Talkline with Zev Brenner." He criticized the DNC for providing a platform to anti-Israel speakers and for the presence of anti-Israel protesters at the event. "It was the most anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist convention I've experienced," Dershowitz stated. "I was disgusted at the Democratic National Convention. Absolutely disgusted."
The Harvard Law professor emeritus declared, "I am no longer a Democrat. I am an Independent," adding that he would not disclose his presidential vote until potentially after November 1. He expressed his desire to observe how the current administration would handle relations with Iran and their support for Israel.

Dershowitz's departure from the Democratic Party was not an abrupt decision. Instead, it was a gradual process influenced by several factors. "A lot of things pushed me in that direction," he said. One significant factor was Harris' absence during a joint session of Congress addressed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This absence, coupled with some Democrats boycotting Netanyahu's speech as a form of protest, played a significant role in his decision.

The final straw, according to Dershowitz, was the convention held in Chicago last month. He singled out Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Rev. Al Sharpton, accusing them of being anti-Israel. He also pointed to anti-Israel protesters outside the convention, advocating for Israel's destruction. "That's not my party," Dershowitz declared.

The Democratic Party has been grappling with internal divisions following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. A faction within the party has refrained from condemning the terror group, instead blaming Netanyahu for Israel's military response. Many Democrats have called for a ceasefire and urged Israel to exercise restraint, while failing to hold Hamas and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed terror group based in Lebanon, to the same standards. This perceived double standard has further fueled Dershowitz's disillusionment with the party.
