Gascón, whose campaign was significantly funded by left-wing billionaire George Soros, expressed his concerns over the scheduled release of Christopher Hubbart, infamously known as the "pillowcase rapist." Hubbart, who has sexually assaulted at least 44 individuals, is set to be discharged from the California Department of State Hospitals and is likely to be relocated to Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Gascón's office issued a press release in which the District Attorney stated, “Continuing to release sexually violent predators into underserved communities like the Antelope Valley is both irresponsible and unjust. We must demand more from our judicial system, ensuring decisions serve the best interests of our communities while exploring alternative locations for these placements.” This statement comes despite Gascón's own controversial history of handling sex crime cases.
In 2022, Gascón was accused of retaliating against Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Shea Sanna for refusing to comply with a directive that would have compelled her to withhold evidence against transgender child sexual predator Hannah Tubbs, formerly known as William Tubbs. Despite the severity of the crimes, Gascón declined to prosecute Tubbs as an adult, given that the sexual assaults occurred when Tubbs was 17. Consequently, Tubbs was sentenced as a 26-year-old to two years in a juvenile facility for girls.

Gascón's handling of sex crime cases has often sparked public outrage. In 2023, he initially refused to file charges against a sexual assault suspect from Long Beach, California, citing insufficient evidence, despite the existence of a video documenting the crime. Following public backlash and pressure from the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office, Gascón's office finally agreed to prosecute the case.

Furthermore, Gascón initially proposed the release of convicted rapist Scott Breckenridge after serving only 30 years of his 73-year sentence. However, following public outcry, prosecutors retracted their decision, citing a misinterpretation of a "new office policy."

Gascón's controversial tenure as District Attorney has significantly impacted his public image and electoral prospects. He is currently lagging behind former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman by 25 points in the 2024 election for district attorney, according to a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies-L.A. Times poll. Gascón's favorability rating stands at a mere 21%, compared to Hochman's 35%.

Gascón's election in 2020 was largely facilitated by Soros' donations. Soros contributed $5 million from 2018 to 2020 through the California Justice & Public Safety PAC to support Gascón and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price. Price is currently facing a recall election following a surge in crime in the county.
