NASA has revised its flight plans for an upcoming SpaceX mission, which was initially intended to rescue astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission, SpaceX Crew-9, will now only carry two astronauts to the ISS, tasked with the responsibility of bringing back the marooned Boeing Crew, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. The duo has been stuck in space for an extended period of eight months.

According to the Daily Mail, astronauts Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson have been removed from the mission roster. However, NASA has assured that they will be "eligible for reassignment on a future mission." The decision to exclude Cardman and Wilson from the mission has inevitably impacted the Crew-9's mission, as they had been preparing as a four-member crew, stated NASA's chief astronaut, Joe Acaba.

The revised mission will now be led by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, serving as the commander and mission specialist, respectively. The decision to favor a Russian crew member over the two American astronauts was made to uphold the agreement with Roscosmos, which requires one Russian astronaut on each SpaceX flight. This arrangement ensures the operation of their critical systems for continued, safe station operations. In return, the US is granted seats on Soyuz spacecraft.

The launch, initially scheduled for September 24, has been postponed to February 2025. Despite the changes and the subsequent adjustments required, Acaba expressed his "utmost confidence in all our crew, who have been excellent throughout training for the mission." He further praised Cardman and Wilson for their professionalism, stating they would continue to assist their crewmates ahead of the launch.

Both Cardman and Wilson harbor no resentment towards the decision, expressing their confidence in Hague and Gorbunov. "I am confident Nick and Alex will step into their roles with excellence," Cardman, a scientist, said.

Hague, an experienced astronaut with 203 days in space, will be embarking on his third launch and second mission to the ISS. He previously served as the director of test and evaluation at the DOD Space Force from 2020 to 2022, before returning to NASA to work on the Boeing Starliner Program. For Gorbunov, this mission will mark his first journey to space.

Upon reaching the ISS, Hague and Gorbunov will join Expedition 72, where they will collaborate with Wilmore, Williams, and others to conduct scientific research and maintenance activities.

The predicament of Wilmore and Williams began when their Boeing ship malfunctioned, and subsequent rescue attempts failed. The possibility of using the same faulty ship to bring them home was considered but ultimately dismissed due to the high risk of a fatal accident. While Boeing officials believed the capsule was safe and capable of bringing the crew back home, NASA decided against it due to a lack of certainty.

The implications of this decision on NASA's relationship with Boeing are yet to be determined. The situation underscores the inherent risks of space travel and the importance of maintaining stringent safety standards, even when they necessitate difficult decisions and significant changes to plans.
