Vice President Kamala Harris has been spending a significant amount of time in Los Angeles, her home city, a fact that has reportedly been causing irritation among her affluent neighbors and raising eyebrows within her own party.

Some Democrats are expressing concern over her absence from the campaign trail, as they believe her presence there could be more beneficial.

According to the New York Post, Harris has spent at least 59 days in 2023 at her $2.7 million Brentwood mansion, which she shares with her husband, Doug Emhoff. This is an increase from the previous year, when she spent at least 46 days in the city, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The Vice President's frequent visits to the upscale neighborhood necessitate the presence of her Secret Service detail, which often results in the closure of the street where she resides. This has reportedly caused annoyance among her predominantly liberal neighbors. One anonymous resident expressed their frustration to the media, stating, "Very annoying to be their neighbor." Another resident went as far as to say they would vote for the Democratic nominee "if she agrees to sell her house."

Harris' frequent travels between coasts have also been criticized as a potential distraction from her political duties, particularly since many of her Los Angeles stays do not involve public events. For instance, following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, a neighbor in Brentwood displayed a sign urging the Vice President to return to Washington and resume her work, as noted by the Wall Street Journal.

The Los Angeles Times reported in late 2022 that nearly a third of Harris' stays in Los Angeles during her first two years in office were not open to the press. Furthermore, her decision to work from home has necessitated the rental of a 6,500-square-foot mansion to accommodate some government employees, a cost borne by the White House.

Despite these criticisms, Harris' time in Los Angeles is not solely spent on personal matters. She often combines political networking and meetings with Hollywood donors with family time. However, her number of retreats is significantly less than President Biden's frequent visits to his residences in Delaware.

Former President Donald Trump and his campaign have seized upon Harris' record as a prosecutor in the Bay Area and her subsequent residency in Los Angeles to label her a "radical California liberal." In response, Harris has emphasized her experience and attempted to appeal to Americans outside of the highly liberal Southern California enclave where she resides.

In her speech accepting the Democratic Party's nomination, she stated, "I know there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know, I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self."

Despite her attempts to appeal to a broader audience, Harris has not shied away from her Californian roots. Speaking to the California Democratic Legislative Caucus in January, she confidently stated, "I, maybe with a bit of bravado, will repeat what I think we all say: So goes California, goes the nation."

The Harris campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment on these matters.
