The lawsuit, which was filed by Khelif's attorney, Nabil Boudi, pertains to alleged instances of cyber-harassment.
As reported by One America News, the lawsuit was filed on August 9th with the Paris public prosecutor's office. The suit was lodged against X, a term used under French law to denote unknown persons. The complaint alleges that Khelif, 25, was the target of "misogynistic, racist, and sexist" cyberbullies.
Boudi explained the implications of the lawsuit, stating, "That ensures that the prosecution has all the latitude to be able to investigate all people, including those who may have written hateful messages under pseudonyms." He further revealed that the lawsuit also mentions other high-profile figures. "JK Rowling and Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, among others," he said, adding that former President Donald Trump could also be part of the investigation.

Khelif, during her illustrious Olympic career, made history by becoming Algeria's first female gold medalist in boxing and the first Algerian boxer to win an Olympic gold medal since 1996. However, her career took a controversial turn when she failed the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) gender eligibility test, leading to her disqualification from the 2023 Boxing World Championships. This raised questions about her gender, despite Khelif having been born female and never claiming to be intersex or transgender. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) disputed the IBA's test, stating, “Scientifically, this is not a man fighting a woman.”

Musk, on the other hand, shared a post from U.S. swimmer Riley Gaines that read “men don’t belong in women’s sports” and added his agreement with the statement. Trump also weighed in on the issue, posting a picture from the fight with the caption: “I will keep men out of women’s sports!”

Khelif, in her statement following the fight, asserted her eligibility to participate in the competition. She said, “I am fully qualified to take part in this competition. I’m a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I have lived as a woman, I competed as a woman, there’s no doubt about that. [The detractors] are enemies of success, that is what I call them. And that also gives my success a special taste because of these attacks.”
The lawsuit, if won by Khelif, could result in Rowling, Musk, and others named in the suit facing a maximum of five years in prison and fines of up to £214,000 (approximately $236,074).
