In a surprising turn of events, Minouche Shafik, the President of Columbia University, has tendered her resignation after a tumultuous year marked by relentless and occasionally destructive anti-Israel demonstrations.

Shafik's departure follows a year of escalating tension on the Ivy League campus, with the president facing increasing demands for her resignation due to her perceived mishandling of the protests that erupted in the wake of Hamas' invasion of Israel on October 7.

According to The New York Post, Shafik was accused of "gross negligence" during her congressional testimony, where she declined to classify the slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" as antisemitic. Critics argued that she failed to adequately address the campus protests until tent encampments began to dominate the university's lawn in the weeks leading up to graduation.

The situation escalated when hundreds of students were arrested on trespassing charges for refusing to dismantle their encampments. The tension reached a boiling point in April when a destructive mob unlawfully seized control of the Hamilton Hall academic building.

Shafik's resignation comes on the heels of the departure of three university deans from Columbia, following the revelation of their "very troubling" text chain that belittled Israeli and Jewish students' concerns about rising anti-Semitism on campus. Deans Susan Chang-Kim, Matthew Patashnick, and Cristen Kromm were found to have used vomit emojis and accused Jewish students of asserting "privilege" during a panel discussion about campus antisemitism fueled by Israel's conflict with Hamas.

Shafik's exit from the university's leadership comes just three weeks before the commencement of the fall semester, leaving the institution in a state of uncertainty as it grapples with these recent upheavals.
