The incident occurred during a military exercise in Australia in August 2023, involving an MV-22B Osprey aircraft.
According to Fox News, an official investigation by the Marine Corps revealed that Cpl. Spencer Collart, 21, did not die from the initial crash. Instead, he met his untimely end when he "heroically reentered the burning cockpit of the aircraft in an attempt to rescue the trapped pilots." The Osprey was carrying a total of 23 service members at the time of the crash.
The majority of the crew managed to escape from the rear of the plane. However, the disaster claimed the lives of Capt. Eleanor LeBeau, aircraft commander Maj. Tobin Lewis, and Cpl. Collart. The circumstances surrounding Collart's death were initially unclear, as a surviving commander reported seeing him exit the wreckage through a side door.

Further investigation at the crash site led to the recovery of Collart's in-flight tether, largely undamaged, which suggested that he had indeed escaped the wreckage. Military investigators now believe that Collart, in a display of selfless bravery, ran back towards the burning aircraft to attempt a rescue of Lewis from the cockpit. Tragically, he succumbed to the heat and smoke, dying alongside the two pilots.

In recognition of his heroic actions, Collart is being posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the Navy's highest noncombat decoration. His sacrifice underscores the courage and selflessness inherent in our military personnel, who are willing to risk their lives in the service of their comrades and their country.
