In the face of a potential Iranian-led assault on Israel, the United States military is reinforcing its presence in the Middle East, the Pentagon confirmed on Sunday.

Iran and Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based terror group supported by Iran, have made it clear that they plan to initiate an attack on Israel, although the specifics of the impending assault remain uncertain.

According to the Conservative Daily News, the U.S., committed to defending Israel, is enhancing its military footprint in the Middle East, as stated by Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has instructed the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to hasten its journey to the Middle East. This strike group, comprising an aircraft carrier, naval destroyers, and fighter jets, will team up with the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is already stationed in the region and equipped with similar capabilities.

Austin has also ordered the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine armed with cruise missiles, to join the U.S. forces in the Middle East. In a conversation with his Israeli counterpart on Sunday, Austin "reiterated the U.S. commitment to take every possible step to defend Israel and noted the strengthening of U.S. military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East," as per his statement.

The Pentagon had previously bolstered its military "force posture" in the region in readiness "to respond to a various number of contingencies," Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh informed reporters last week. Despite the U.S.'s pledge to protect Israel from an Iranian attack, it is concurrently exploring diplomatic alternatives to alleviate the tensions between Israel and Iran.

The planned attack by Iran and Hezbollah is believed to be a retaliatory move for the assassination of a top Hezbollah and Hamas leader in late July, the latter of whom was killed in Iran's capital. Although strikes were anticipated last week, Iran and Hezbollah, along with Iran's other terrorist groups in the Middle East, have not executed attacks beyond what has been routine over approximately the last year.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reportedly informed Austin during their Sunday phone call that an attack is expected within days, as per a source familiar with the call who spoke to Axios. This development underscores the urgency of the situation and the necessity for the U.S. to stand firm in its commitment to Israel's defense.
