In a recent interview, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that the Republican Party bears some responsibility for the 2022 hammer attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi.

Speaking to MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell, Pelosi stated, “I think they take some responsibility for that.” She was responding to a question about whether she holds those who have “targeted” and “demonized” her accountable for the violent assault on her then-82-year-old spouse by David DePape.

According to The New York Post, Pelosi, a Democrat from California, accused the GOP of engaging in the “politics of personal destruction” since the Clinton administration. She further alleged that the party has intensified its attacks on her in recent years, which she believes “fueled” her husband’s attacker. “The Republican Party with cloven feet, head horns — really, actually, they started under Clinton, Hillary and Bill Clinton. The politics of personal destruction and then they transferred that to me,” she said. Pelosi added, “When they were doing it they went into a different territory of political debate and it fed a flame, it fueled a flame.”

Earlier this week, Pelosi expressed feelings of guilt over the attack during an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” She suggested that DePape was politically motivated, while her husband Paul Pelosi is “not very political.” She said, “What was sad about my husband’s situation is he’s not very political. They were after me. And I feel guilty about his paying the price.”

DePape, who had delved into internet conspiracy theories, admitted during his trial that Paul Pelosi “was never my target.” He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in May after breaking into the Pelosi's San Francisco home and attacking Paul Pelosi with a hammer.
