In a move that marked his first executive action as the Democratic governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz established a council for diversity, equity, and inclusion, which would oversee all state government activities.

Notably, he appointed himself as the chair of this council. Recently, Walz was chosen as Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate for the 2024 presidential race.

As reported by The Post Millennial, in 2019, Walz, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, informed The Associated Press that the "One Minnesota Council on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity" would ensure that all state government operations, including "recruiting; retaining and promoting state employees; state government contracting; and civic engagement," would be viewed through the "lens of equity."

"Walz told reporters Wednesday he’ll chair the council," the AP reported, "patterned on a similar council formed by former Gov. Mark Dayton, but expand its scope to include geographic diversity and other considerations." Walz emphasized that the council's mission was to "work to ensure that all Minnesotans have the opportunity to fully participate in the development of state policy. He says it will ensure that the 'lens of equity' is focused on everything the state does, whether it’s transportation projects or hiring."

Throughout his tenure, Walz has frequently acknowledged the "privilege" he has been granted as a "white man." He stated, "I understand the privilege I've been given as a white man," and asserted that his role in office was "not just to talk about the problem" of racial disparity, "but the solve the problem."

The executive order issued by Walz highlighted that “Disparities in Minnesota, including those based on race, geography, and economic status, keep our entire state from reaching its full potential. As long as inequities impact Minnesotans’ ability to be successful, we have work to do.”

In addition to the council, Walz also instituted the Governor’s Community Council on Inclusion and Equity. This body was tasked with collaborating with the council to devise a “long-range” plan to incorporate “anti-racism principles” into every state agency. The order mandated that all state agencies develop “anti-racist and equitable frameworks” and required state employees to understand and articulate the importance of ending systemic racism and how their individual roles contribute to this goal.

Furthermore, Walz introduced the position of chief equity officer that year.
