Rapaport posted a video on social media, ridiculing Shapiro with a caption that read, “Josh Shapiro UNJEWED himself publicly and still didn’t get picked. When UnJewing goes Wrong.”
This incident comes in the wake of a report by The Times of Israel, which shed light on Shapiro's attempts to disassociate himself from a contentious op-ed he penned during his college years. In the said op-ed, Shapiro, a former volunteer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), expressed his belief that Palestinians are excessively "battle-minded" to seek peace with Israel.

The Times of Israel reported, "In the 1993 newspaper op-ed, which dismissed the recently signed Oslo Accords, Shapiro wrote, “Despite my skepticism as a Jew and a past volunteer in the Israeli army, I strongly hope and pray that this ‘peace plan’ will be successful.” The op-ed, written during his time at the University of Rochester, appears to be the first public disclosure of his direct ties to the IDF.

Shapiro's Jewish heritage is well-documented, including his education at the Akiba Hebrew Academy in Philadelphia. However, his op-ed titled “Peace Not Possible” stirred controversy with statements such as, “Palestinians will not coexist peacefully,” and “They do not have the capabilities to establish their own homeland and make it successful even with the aid of Israel and the United States. They are too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own,” as written by the then 20-year-old student.

The op-ed resurfaced just days before Vice President and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris was due to announce her running mate. Shapiro has been the target of a vigorous campaign by far-left and anti-Israel activists, who have labeled him “Genocide Josh” and cautioned Harris against selecting him. These critics have also been accused of antisemitism, as Shapiro's recent views are no less critical of Israel than others on the shortlist who are not Jewish.

In response to the controversy, Shapiro's spokesperson, Manuel Bonder, attempted to clarify his past. As reported by The Times of Israel, Bonder stated, “While he was in high school, Josh Shapiro was required to do a service project, which he and several classmates completed through a program that took them to a kibbutz in Israel where he worked on a farm and at a fishery. The program also included volunteering on service projects on an Israeli army base. At no time was he engaged in any military activities.”

In a bid to salvage his political career, Shapiro distanced himself from his earlier pro-Israel sentiments, attributing them to his youth, stating, “he was 20.” However, this shift did not seem to appease the far-left, and Kamala Harris eventually selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.

Senator Tom Cotton commented on the situation, saying, “Let’s be honest. Kamala is the most anti-Israel member of Biden’s team, always siding with Hamas and Iran’s interests.” Cotton further claimed that while Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz may hold similar views on Israel, Harris ultimately chose Walz to appeal to her pro-Hamas supporters who oppose Shapiro simply because he is Jewish.

Rapaport seized the opportunity to mock Shapiro, using him as an example of a Jew who tried to placate anti-Jewish prejudice by criticizing Israel — only to be rejected anyway. According to Breitbart, Rapaport stated, “You’re a f—king Jew. You might not support Israel. You might not agree with Israel. But remember, if you were in Israel on the October 7th, you’d be treated as a Jew. You b—tch ass as a Jew. You will always be treated by radical terrorists as a Jew. Your ancestors are embarrassed by you, b—ch ass, weak ass, self-hating motherf—kers.”
