Kyle Rittenhouse, the young man who gained notoriety following his involvement in a fatal shooting during the Kenosha unrest in 2020, has publicly criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's commitment to tackle gun violence.

This comes as the Democratic duo gears up for the 2024 election, with Harris currently holding a slight edge over former President Donald Trump.

According to Newsweek, the Democrats are hoping to capitalize on Harris' slender lead by selecting Walz, a second-term governor known for his progressive policies and appeal to both urban and rural constituents, as her running mate. The pair kicked off their campaign in Philadelphia, where Harris lauded Walz's efforts on gun reform and pledged to implement an assault weapons ban. Rittenhouse, however, was quick to voice his disapproval.

"Inflation is rampant, our border is NOT secure, and the economy is getting weaker -- yet disarming the law-abiding American is the top priority for Harris & Walz," Rittenhouse posted on X, a social media platform. Despite his assertion, Harris and Walz have clarified that their plan does not involve disarming law-abiding citizens, but rather tightening gun ownership laws.

"Tim is a hunter and a gun owner who believes, as the majority of gun owners do, that we need reasonable gun safety laws in America," Harris said during the rally, a sentiment that was met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd and Walz. "So as governor, he expanded background checks and increased penalties for illegal firearm sales. And together when we win in November we are finally going to pass universal background checks, red flag laws and an assault weapons ban."

Red flag laws refer to civil procedures that allow individuals to request a judge to issue an emergency order to temporarily confiscate a person's guns if they pose a potential danger to themselves or others. Harris further praised Walz's work, stating that he "really does shine a light on a brighter future that we can build together."

Walz's addition to Harris' campaign comes at a time when Republicans, including Trump and his running mate JD Vance, are focusing on the U.S.-Mexico border and Harris' immigration record. Walz, who stated that immigration is integral to his state's economy and culture during his 2022 reelection campaign, has been dubbed the "Border Czar."

Rittenhouse, who was acquitted of all charges related to the Kenosha shooting, has since become a prominent figure in conservative circles and a staunch advocate for gun rights. He has made several appearances at conservative events and media outlets, and even met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump has publicly stated that Rittenhouse "should have never been" charged.

Rittenhouse's criticism of Harris and Walz's gun control policies comes after he released a video statement on X, expressing his reluctance to vote for Trump due to Second Amendment issues. However, he later retracted his statement, admitting that his comments were "ill-informed" and encouraging "every gun owner to join me in helping send" the former President back to the White House. This incident underscores the complexities and contentious nature of the gun control debate, particularly as the 2024 election looms.
