The recent announcement of Vice President Harris' selection of Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., as her running mate has sparked a flurry of reactions.

Among the most notable is that of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who lauded the choice as "wonderful" during a live interview on Tuesday. Pelosi, however, did not shy away from addressing critics who argue that Walz leans too far to the left.

"Tim Walz is wonderful. She had many good choices. Tim Walz I know very well. He served in the House. To characterize him as left is so unreal. It’s just not, he’s right down the middle. He’s a heartland of America Democrat," Pelosi passionately defended on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," as reported by Fox News.

Walz, 60, is currently serving his second term as the governor of Minnesota, a state known for its Democratic leanings. The Trump campaign had previously targeted this state in an attempt to flip it. Walz's political career includes a stint in the House, where he was elected in 2006 and subsequently re-elected five times. He represented Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, a predominantly rural area that encompasses several midsize cities. His tenure on Capitol Hill culminated in his role as the ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

Pelosi continued to express her bafflement at the portrayal of Walz as a far-left figure. "Really it’s mystifying to me to see someone that I worked with, shall we say right down the middle, characterized on the left in this regard. He has her confidence, obviously. That was the decision that the presidential nominee, soon-to-be president of the United States, has made. I respect her decision. I respect all the rest," she said.

She further highlighted Walz's vision for the country, which she described as centered on working-class families, rural America, and veterans. "He has a great vision for our country. It’s about working-class families, about rural America, about our veterans. He has won for governor two times in Minnesota. Reverend [Al] Sharpton talked about his decision in terms of the George Floyd, such a sad situation. And obviously, we respect the judgment of our nominee for president. Her comfort level is our comfort level," Pelosi added.

However, Walz's recent comments about his political opponents have raised eyebrows. During a campaign event for Harris, he referred to former President Trump and Sen. JD Vance as "weird." "These guys are just weird," he said. "The fascists depend on us going back, but we’re not afraid of weird people. We’re a little bit creeped out, but we’re not afraid."

Walz also faced criticism for his remarks during a "White Dudes for Harris" phone call, where he encouraged the participants to embrace their progressive values. "Don’t ever shy away from our progressive values," he said. "One person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness."

Before settling on Walz, Harris was also considering Gov. Josh Shapiro, D-Pa. and Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz. as potential running mates. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the choice of Walz as a running mate is sure to have significant implications for the upcoming election.
