In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a socialist, has faced backlash after criticizing The New York Post for endorsing his primary opponent, George Latimer, the Westchester County Executive.

According to The New York Post, Bowman's reaction was not met with the support he anticipated.

Bowman took to social media to express his disdain, stating, “I am proud to be the only candidate in the NY-16 primary not endorsed by the racist right wing New York Post.” His comment, however, did not resonate with his followers as he had hoped.

Instead of receiving applause from his supporters, Bowman was met with a wave of mockery and criticism. Arsen Ostrovsky, one of the commenters, sarcastically asked, “Are you endorsed by Hamas?” This comment alludes to Bowman's controversial stance on the terrorist group, where he has consistently advocated for a ceasefire that would allow Hamas to retain power in Gaza.

Bowman's actions and affiliations have raised eyebrows in the past. He has been seen in the company of individuals who celebrated the Oct 7 massacre in Israel, a move that has not gone unnoticed by his critics. Gideon Dabi, an opera singer and voice teacher, referenced Bowman's infamous decision to pull a Capitol fire alarm during a government funding vote last year, stating, “I saw the latest poll and you’re down big. Seems like an emergency worthy of pulling a fire alarm.”

The online community did not hold back, with many sharing security footage of the fire alarm incident or simply posting images of an alarm. One commenter went as far as to suggest that Bowman's campaign reeked of desperation.

Chaskel Bennett, a New York City activist for Jewish issues, pointed out that while The New York Post may not have endorsed Bowman, he did receive endorsement from the liberal Daily News. Bennett added, “But you got the Squad and Hamas.”

Bowman's primary on June 25 is garnering national attention, marking the first time a “Squad” lawmaker will face voters since the Oct 7 Hamas attack. Despite the focus on his anti-Israel stance, local issues are expected to play a significant role in the race. Bowman's vote against the Biden infrastructure bill, for instance, has been a recurring talking point for Latimer's team.
