Prominent British conservative commentator, Piers Morgan, has publicly rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what he termed the "indefensible" Israeli strikes on Rafah.

Morgan, known for his forthright views, expressed his disquiet over the recent Israeli offensive in Gaza in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Morgan's post read, "The scenes from Rafah overnight are horrific. I've defended Israel's right to defend itself after Oct7, but slaughtering so many innocent people as they cower in a refugee camp is indefensible. Stop this now @netanyahu."

The October 7 reference pertains to the attack launched by militant group Hamas against Israel, which resulted in the death of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of approximately 250 others. In response, Israel initiated an offensive in the Gaza Strip, which, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health as cited by the Associated Press, has led to the death of over 35,000 Palestinians in the ensuing months. This has sparked global apprehension over the high civilian death toll.

The most recent Israeli airstrike targeted a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, a city near the Gaza-Egypt border crossing, killing at least 35 people, as reported by the Associated Press. This attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from Morgan, who has traditionally supported Israel's right to self-defense.

In a separate post, Morgan drew a parallel with the Irish Republican Army's (IRA) attacks in England, stating, "When the IRA were murdering people in England, we didn't drop 2000lb bombs on Belfast because the terrorists were living among civilians."

Yaari Cohen, an official from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, countered Morgan's critique, stating, "Piers, I would think it prudent for a Journalist to mention the strike in Rafah was a precision strike targeted at 2 Senior Hamas commanders." Cohen further clarified that the strike resulted in the death of two Hamas members, Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar.

Morgan retorted, "Well it wasn't very precise, was it...."

This exchange comes amid escalating international pressure on Israel due to growing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his outrage over the Israeli strikes, stating, "Outraged by the Israeli strikes that have killed many displaced persons in Rafah. These operations must stop. There are no safe areas in Rafah for Palestinian civilians. I call for full respect for international law and an immediate ceasefire."

Adding to the pressure, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague issued several directives to Netanyahu regarding the situation in Rafah. The ICJ expressed its skepticism over Israel's efforts to evacuate Palestinian civilians from the city and ordered Israel to reopen the Rafah border crossing with Egypt for large-scale humanitarian aid, allow access to Gaza for investigators and fact-finding missions, and provide a progress report to the court within a month on implementing these measures.
