In a significant development in Oregon's 3rd Congressional District, Susheela Jayapal, sister of prominent Squad member Rep.

Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), suffered a defeat in the Democratic primary.

The seat, currently held by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), is up for grabs following his decision to retire after nearly three decades of service.

The victor of the primary was Democratic contender Maxine Dexter, who secured the race with 53.2 percent of the vote, as reported by Decision Desk. This result was based on over a third of the votes counted. Dexter triumphed over Jayapal and six other Democrats vying for Blumenauer's position, which represents the Portland-area district.

Jayapal's campaign had received backing from notable figures within the progressive movement. This included her sister, as well as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Barbara Lee (D-CA).

On the other hand, Dexter's endorsements were predominantly local. She received support from former Oregon Governors John Kitzhaber (D) and Ted Kulongoski (D), Oregon Senate President Rob Wagner (D), and Oregon Speaker of the House Julie Fahey (D).

This outcome underscores the shifting dynamics within the Democratic party, as a candidate with local endorsements triumphed over one backed by national progressive figures.
