Prominent human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has been identified as one of the experts who provided counsel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its pursuit of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The ICC's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, confirmed to CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Monday that the court is actively seeking the warrants on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, in relation to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Sinwar is under scrutiny for the attacks on southern Israel that took place on October 7, while Netanyahu is being pursued in connection with Israel's airstrikes on Gaza. This marks a historic moment as it is the first instance of the ICC targeting a leader from a country allied with the U.S.

Following the announcement, Khan issued a statement expressing his gratitude for the advice he received from a panel of experts, including Clooney.

Clooney's profile on the ICC website, as per her special adviser role, states that she "represented victims of ISIS in the only three trials in the world in which ISIS members have been convicted of genocide and in five other trials convicting ISIS members of war crimes and crimes against humanity."
