New York Attorney General Letitia James, known for her recent triumphant tweets about the court decision against former President Donald Trump, has been accused of living a lavish lifestyle far beyond her six-figure salary.

This claim was made by Mel (@Villgecrazylady), a user of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), who uses publicly available data to expose the extravagant lifestyle of James.

According to Mel, James has managed to stay within the legal boundaries, with the exception of an incident in the 2010s when she failed to disclose a Brooklyn brownstone she owns and rents out on her public financial disclosure forms. However, James has been accused of misusing public and campaign funds on questionable expenditures, seemingly unrelated to her official duties.

In 2023, James reportedly spent over $15,000 on stays at luxury hotels in Puerto Rico. The connection between this expenditure and her duties as New York's Attorney General remains unclear, although Mel suggests it may be linked to an ongoing investigation.

During her five-year tenure as Attorney General, James has allegedly accumulated over $84,000 in airfare expenses, including private plane rentals. Critics argue that such expenses seem excessive for a state Attorney General.

Mel also highlights that James has charged her campaign over $20,000 per year for meals. These are not large catering events, but individual receipts ranging from $18 at Dunkin Donuts to $700 at a Brooklyn steakhouse.

Further scrutiny of James' expenditures reveals more questionable spending. Over $7,000 was reportedly spent at a New York nightclub, which was written off as an "office" expense. In addition, over $300,000 was spent on "campaign consultants" in the year James won reelection in 2022. Critics argue that these expenditures seem to have little to do with campaigning or office-related activities.

Mel's investigation into James' spending habits paints a picture of a public servant living a lavish lifestyle at the expense of campaign donors and the public. As Bob Hoge recently noted regarding James, "The power-hungry partisan has also been threatening to seize Trump's assets if he doesn't pay up immediately."

Critics argue that this is not how a law enforcement official should behave. State prosecutors are not supposed to be openly partisan, vindictive toward political opponents, or unapologetically devoted to crushing their ideological adversaries.

Despite these allegations, James continues to serve as New York's Attorney General, seemingly unphased by the criticism. Critics argue that this is a clear example of a "rules for thee, not for me" mindset, where public servants live lavish lifestyles at the expense of the public they are supposed to serve.
