In a recent development, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has unveiled plans to establish an 80-acre base in Eagle Pass to accommodate 1,800 National Guard troops.

"Texas is expanding our border security capabilities by building a new Texas Military Department base camp to increase and improve border security operations in this area," Governor Abbott stated. He further explained that the new base would enhance the operational efficiency of the Texas Military Department soldiers stationed in Eagle Pass. "Before now, the Texas National Guard had been scattered across this entire region in cramped quarters, away from fellow soldiers, and sometimes traveling long distances to do their job. This base camp is going to dramatically improve conditions for our soldiers," Abbott added.

The Governor also acknowledged the crucial role of the Texas National Guard in responding to the border crisis under President Biden's administration. "Texas would not be able to respond to President Biden's border crisis without the brave men and women of the Texas National Guard, and it is essential to build this base camp for them," he said.

Major General Suelzer, who was present at the press conference, provided further details about the planned base. "In addition to being able to house 1,800 troops in their own individual rooms, Forward Operating Base Eagle will also have surge capability of taking on 500 additional troops should we need to deploy the Texas Tactical Border Force to this area," he revealed.

Suelzer also mentioned that the base's construction would be expanded in the coming weeks to bolster local security around Eagle Pass. "We are also adding three more fan boats and expanding our drone program radar truck capabilities. Under Governor Abbott's leadership, we are deploying every available resource and strategy to protect and defend Texas," he affirmed.

This decision comes as the Biden administration engages in a legal battle with Texas over the state's decision to criminalize illegal border crossings. Governor Abbott's office has attributed these and other border security measures to the perceived inaction of President Biden and the federal government in securing the border. The Governor enumerated 13 different steps that Texas has had to undertake to secure the southern border.
