As the 2024 presidential election looms, President Joe Biden's reelection campaign and his team are reportedly strategizing to use the upcoming State of the Union address in March as a pivotal moment to reinvigorate his bid.

This comes amid concerns over his trailing performance against former President Donald Trump in several key swing states, as reported by Axios.

With less than a year to go before the election, Biden's reelection prospects have been a source of worry for many of his top allies. However, his team views the State of the Union address as a potential turning point that could help dispel discussions about the 81-year-old's suitability for office.

A source close to Biden, speaking to Axios, stated, "Everyone around him is well aware — well aware — of the need to jack this campaign up." The source added, "The only way to deal with the negative aftershocks of the special counsel’s report [slamming Biden’s age] is for the president to be out there, to be visible — to be strong of presence and strong of voice.”

Biden's team is reportedly aiming to replicate the success of his 2023 State of the Union address, which they believe effectively showcased the president's vitality as he criticized Republicans and discussed Social Security. In the lead-up to the March address, officials close to Biden are expected to devote their time to refining his speech and assisting with physical preparation.

Despite the ongoing concerns about Biden's fitness following special counsel Robert Hur’s report, his campaign remains hopeful of a turnaround, buoyed by a growing morale among staff, according to Axios.

In the run-up to the address, Biden is reportedly contemplating a significant executive action to address the border crisis, Axios sources revealed.

The importance attached to the State of the Union address follows Trump's largest lead against Biden, ahead by 4.3 points on Jan. 26, according to the RealClearPolitics (RCP) average. Biden hasn’t led Trump in the RCP average since September 2023.

A February 6 NBC poll revealed that at least 76% of American voters harbor concerns about Biden’s age and health ahead of the 2024 election. The same poll showed that 54% of Democrats are worried about Biden’s fitness for a second term.

A female Democratic poll respondent from Wisconsin, who voted for Biden in 2020, told NBC News, “I think that [Biden’s] health and age kind of get in the way of his ability to be a good President of the United States.”
