President Biden has called for the House GOP's impeachment inquiry into his conduct to be dropped following the arrest of the confidential source at the center of bribery allegations.

The source, Alexander Smirnov, has been charged with making false statements to the FBI. When asked about the charges, Biden stated, "He is lying, and it should be dropped, and it's just been an outrageous effort from the beginning."

GOP lawmakers pushing for Biden's impeachment have frequently cited conversations Smirnov had with the FBI, in which he claimed that the head of Ukrainian energy company Burisma had paid the president and his son Hunter Biden $5 million. However, the indictment against Smirnov alleges that he fabricated these allegations due to his opposition to President Biden's candidacy.

In a press release announcing the grand jury indictment, the Justice Department stated, "As alleged in the indictment, the events that Smirnov first reported to the FBI Agent in June 2020 were fabrications." The charges were brought by special counsel David Weiss, a Trump appointee who has also brought tax charges against Hunter Biden, who previously served on Burisma's board.

This indictment poses a threat to the House GOP's efforts to portray Biden as corrupt and pursue potential articles of impeachment against him. Biden has consistently maintained his innocence, stating that he has done nothing wrong and has not been involved in his son's business.

The arrest and charges against Smirnov have raised questions about the credibility of the allegations against President Biden. As the impeachment inquiry continues, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the proceedings and the broader political landscape.
