Is Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, out of touch with reality?.

This question arises in light of his recent comments defending his role in the Biden administration's immigration policies.

Mayorkas, who has been accused of being a serial fabricator, continues to defend the administration's policies, seemingly in the hope that Democratic voters will continue to support the administration's approach to immigration. This approach, critics argue, involves the importation of illegal immigrants to bolster the Democratic vote.

In a comprehensive interview with The New York Times, Mayorkas made a bold claim, asserting that the U.S. needs more, not fewer, illegal immigrants. He posed the question, "Wouldn't it be more orderly, and wouldn’t it be responsible governance to be able to deliver a lawful pathway to fill what we have, which is a labor need, and cut the exploitative smugglers out and give individuals a path to arrive lawfully, safely, in an orderly way, to perform labor that we need?"

He further suggested that these immigrants could send remittances home and return to their countries once their work is completed, arguing that this could be a component of a functional immigration system.

However, his assertion that immigrants would return home after their work is completed has been met with skepticism.

When asked to respond to the efforts of House Republicans to impeach him for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors, including accusations of failing to secure the border and lying about it, Mayorkas dismissed the charges as "baseless." He stated, "I think it is baseless. I think it’s a political process, and I am not engaged in politics. I’m engaged in the work of the Department of Homeland Security."

Despite his denial, critics argue that Mayorkas is deeply involved in politics, specifically in advancing the Democratic Party's agenda. This agenda, they claim, involves allowing as many illegal immigrants into the country as possible.

According to a report I published on January 27, the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border reached a record high in December, with 371,036 individuals apprehended. This figure surpasses the previous record of 341,392 set in August 2023. The number of encounters along the Southwest border also hit a record high, reaching 302,034, according to data released by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) on January 26.

A recent report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) indicates that since President Biden took office, the administration has permitted 6.2 million illegal immigrants to enter the country. When factoring in those who evaded capture, some estimates suggest the total could be as high as nine million.
