The House Homeland Security Committee, in a late-night session on Tuesday, approved two impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The decision, which fell along party lines, paves the way for a House floor vote as early as next week to impeach President Biden's contentious appointee.

The impeachment articles allege that Secretary Mayorkas has "repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security." They also accuse him of making "false statements to Congress" about the security and closure of the border, and the Department of Homeland Security's operational control over it.

The vote came after an extended hearing where Republicans laid out their case for Mayorkas' removal. They pointed to record-breaking illegal border crossings and the mass release of illegal immigrants into the US as evidence of his failure. The Republican members further accused Mayorkas of violating immigration law.

Committee Chairman Mark Green expressed his concern, stating, "Today is a grave day. We have not approached this day or this process lightly. Secretary Mayorkas’ actions have forced our hand. We cannot allow this border crisis to continue."

Representative Clay Higgins (R-LA) added, "My colleagues across the aisle seem to say that it's acceptable that we've had 10 million illegal crossings in three years and we've had pushing 300,000 Americans dead from opioid overdose. We're losing our country down there. And the man responsible for executing that policy is Alejandro Mayorkas."

Earlier in the day, Mayorkas defended his record in a letter, dismissing the proceedings as baseless. He wrote, "I assure you that your false accusations do not rattle me and do not divert me from the law enforcement and broader public service mission to which I have devoted most of my career and to which I remain devoted.”

He attributed the record-breaking border crossings to issues with the "broken and outdated immigration system," and labeled the allegations against him as "baseless and inaccurate."

In March 2021, he advised potential illegal immigrants, "We are not saying don't come, we are saying don't come now, because we will be able to deliver a safe and orderly process to them as quickly as possible." He urged them to wait "with a goal in mind."

While assuring Americans that the border was closed, he told the world, "Give us time to build another safe way to arrive in the United States and make the claims that the law permits you to make."

Should the House vote in favor of impeachment, the case will proceed to the Senate for trial.
