In a recent interview, Vice President Kamala Harris lauded President Biden as "extraordinarily smart," a comment that comes amidst growing public concerns about the President's age as he potentially gears up for the 2024 election.

If re-elected, Biden, currently the oldest president to occupy the Oval Office, would be 86 years old at the end of his second term.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll recently revealed that a mere 28% of respondents believe Biden possesses the mental acuity to successfully complete another four-year term. This figure represents a significant drop from May 2020, when half of the surveyed Americans expressed confidence in Biden's leadership capabilities.

ABC News' Chief White House Correspondent, Mary Bruce, questioned Harris about the Biden campaign's strategy to alter public perception concerning the President's age. Harris responded, "I'll tell you, the reality of it is, and I've spent a lot of time with Biden, be it in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room and other places – he is extraordinarily smart. He has the ability to see around the corner in terms of what might be the challenges we face as a nation or globally."

Harris further emphasized the public support for the Biden administration, stating, "Well, I mean, listen, you're here with me in South Carolina. You saw every room we went in. The numbers of people who are there, applauding quite loudly, and they're applauding for me and they're applauding for Joe Biden and for what we as an administration have accomplished. They're there because they believe in what we're doing and they want to see us continue to do this work."

First Lady Jill Biden also came to her husband's defense last week, asserting that his age is an "asset." In a conversation with MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski, she was asked about the President's age and health, given the high stakes of his position. "He can do it," Biden confidently replied. "I see Joe every day. I see him out, you know, traveling around this country. I see his vigor. I see his energy. I see his passion every single day."

When asked about those hesitant to vote for President Biden due to his age, the First Lady responded, "His age is an asset," prompting Brzezinski to laugh and add, "He's wise." Jill Biden agreed, saying, "He's wise. He has wisdom. He has experience. He knows every leader on the world stage. He's lived history. He knows history. He's thoughtful in his decisions. He is the right man, the right person for the job at this moment in history."

However, a Monmouth University poll from October indicated that 76% of voters considered Biden "too old" to serve another term, compared to 48% who said the same about former President Donald Trump, 77, despite a mere three-and-a-half-year age difference between the two.

A similar poll conducted by The New York Times/Siena College in October revealed that 71% of respondents believe Biden is "too old" to serve as an effective President. Even among Biden's own supporters, over half (54%) believe he is too old for the job.
