In a recent town hall meeting in Berlin, New Hampshire, Nikki Haley, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, found herself in the midst of a controversy over her response to a question about the cause of the American Civil War.

Her answer, which sidestepped the issue of slavery, drew sharp criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and President Joe Biden.

A voter at the town hall asked Haley, "What was the cause of the United States Civil War?" Haley responded with a light-hearted remark, "Well, don't come with an easy question or anything." She then proceeded to offer a more abstract perspective on the cause of the Civil War, attributing it to disagreements over "how government was gonna run" and "the freedoms and what people could and couldn't do." This response diverged from the widely accepted view that slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War.

Haley then redirected the question back to the voter, who expressed his astonishment at Haley's omission of slavery from her response. He stated, "It's astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning the word 'slavery.'"

In her defense, Haley insisted that the issue "always comes down to the role of government," but she still did not mention slavery. As the former governor of South Carolina, Haley had previously made headlines in 2015 when she removed the Confederate flag from the state capitol, asserting that the flag represented heritage rather than racism.

Haley further elaborated on her views, stating, "I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are. And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people." She emphasized her belief in limited government intervention, individual freedom, and capitalism.

However, Haley's remarks did not go unchallenged. The DeSantis campaign, through Christina Pushaw of the rapid response team, criticized Haley's response as a "word-salad." Pushaw also accused Haley of being hesitant to criticize slavery due to her alleged history of providing corporate welfare and free land to China.

President Joe Biden also joined the fray, succinctly stating on his social media account, "It was about slavery." Other Democrats, including DNC National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, criticized Haley's response. Harrison recalled Haley's tenure as governor of South Carolina, stating, "Same person who said the Confederate flag was about tradition & heritage and as a minority woman she was the right person to defend keeping it on state house grounds."

Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, a Democratic presidential nominee, also weighed in on the controversy, stating, "Sorry, Nikki Haley. The Civil War was about slavery. Period."

The Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865, was primarily fought over the issue of slavery. The Southern states, which were largely dependent on slave labor, argued for their constitutional right to make their own laws, including the law to enslave people. The Northern Union states, however, disagreed with this stance.

The contentious issue of slavery had been a point of contention since the founding of the United States and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution.
