Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips revealed new details about his campaign platform in an exclusive interview with The Post.

Phillips, who has been gradually rolling out his policy proposals since launching his campaign in late October, discussed his views on reparations, universal basic income, securing the border, Medicare for All, and the Middle East.

On the topic of reparations, Phillips expressed his belief in investing in disadvantaged communities to raise their standard of living. He emphasized the need to acknowledge the injustice done to black Americans and called for outstanding education, healthcare, childcare, pre-K education, and housing for all. Phillips also argued that federal cannabis legalization and criminal justice reform are forms of reparations.

Regarding universal basic income, Phillips stated that he would be open to experimenting with it due to the impact of artificial intelligence on job loss. He highlighted the need to address the millions of jobs that will be lost and expressed support for UBI pilot programs. He cited examples such as Harris County, Texas, which is providing a monthly payment of $500 to residents using unused COVID-19 relief funds.

Phillips also discussed his stance on securing the border, advocating for a comprehensive approach that includes barriers, technologies, human resources, and reimagined ports of entry. He emphasized the importance of border security and expressed concern about the lack of attention given to the northern border with Canada. He argued that securing the borders is a national security crisis and criticized past presidents for failing to address the issue.

On the topic of healthcare, Phillips supported the idea of Medicare for All, framing it as a centrist and moderate notion that everyone should have insurance. He proposed a single-payer system that would cover costs while allowing the government to not be directly involved in the provision of care. Phillips acknowledged that federal taxes would increase but argued that overall costs for Americans would decrease.

Throughout the interview, Phillips also addressed his concerns about President Biden's age and low polling numbers, which he has made a focus of his campaign. He expressed his belief that Biden's age is dangerous for the US and highlighted his efforts to gain ballot access in states that are not holding Democratic primaries due to having an incumbent in office.
