The United States' northern border with Canada has experienced a staggering 550 percent surge in illegal immigrant crossings in the 2023 fiscal year, a crisis that ignited when President Biden assumed office in 2021.

According to Border Patrol officials, the majority of illegal immigrants infiltrating through the northern border are originating from Mexico, India, Venezuela, Haiti, and Romania. They caution that human traffickers are exploiting these migrants, a situation exacerbated by President Biden's lenient border policies.

The Daily Mail has reported that there were 6,925 apprehensions in the Swanton sector in the fiscal year 2023, which concluded at the end of September, compared to a mere 1,000 in the same sector the previous year. The Swanton sector encompasses New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont, marking a 550 percent increase.

Illegal crossings have escalated across the entire northern border. In 2023, there were 189,402 migrant encounters, a significant rise from 109,535 in 2022. In 2021, there were only 27,000 recorded migrant encounters.

Earlier this year, Chief Border Patrol Agent Robert Garcia raised concerns and requested CBP agents to volunteer for transfer to the northern border. Garcia cautioned that human traffickers are exploiting desperate asylum seekers amid harsh weather and hazardous journeys, as reported by the outlet.

In response to the escalating crisis, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu announced the establishment of the Northern Border Alliance Task Force in October. Sununu labeled the situation a "national security risk."

Sununu disclosed that his office has secured $1.4 million from the state's current budget to enhance state and local law enforcement patrols along the 58 miles of the border that New Hampshire shares with Canada. The Republican governor elaborated that CBP agents have encountered individuals on "terrorist watch lists," and he is not willing to take any risks.

"Encounters with individuals on the terrorist watch list at the ports of entry on the northern border have doubled since 2017," Sununu stated. "There have been more apprehensions along our northern border in just this past year than in the last ten years combined."

Moreover, Gov. Sununu warned that the threats to national security "are becoming more and more obvious every day." Consequently, Sununu asserted, "It is made very clear to us that we do need more targeted resources. We need to provide an all-hands-on-deck approach."

Sununu criticized the Biden administration, claiming that the White House has consistently rejected the state's pleas for assistance.

Adding to Sununu's concerns, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy recently visited the northern border and demonstrated in a video the ease with which one can illegally enter the United States from Canada. Ramaswamy argued that the northern border also necessitates a wall.

Regarding the US-Southern border, there have been over 2 million illegal crossings within the past year, with more than 6 million encounters since Joe Biden assumed the presidency in 2021.
