A select group of Ukrainian pilots have embarked on a training program in the United States to master the operation of F-16 fighter jets, a process anticipated to span "several months."

The training is being conducted by the 162nd Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard, a unit renowned for its expertise in training international partners to fly these specific aircraft.

The commencement of this specialized training followed the pilots' successful completion of language instruction at the Defense Language Institute English Language Center in San Antonio, Texas. The pilots had arrived in the U.S. in the latter part of September.

The U.S. has outlined plans to train approximately 200 pilots, contingent on their successful completion of the requisite language training. This initiative comes in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's repeated appeals for F-16 fighter jets to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russia. A group of nations led by Denmark has committed to supplying Ukraine with the jets and facilitating the training of the pilots.

In August, the U.S. declared its intention to train a limited number of pilots to assist European nations with constrained training capacity. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the U.S. would approve the third-party transfer of the jets once training is concluded. As F-16 jets are American technology, U.S. approval is necessary for such transfers.

Blinken assured his Dutch and Danish counterparts in August, "You have my assurances that we will expedite approval of the requisite Third Party Transfer requests in time to enable delivery when the training is completed, including required notification to our Congress."

Despite President Biden's earlier reservations about sending F-16 jets to Ukraine, he has authorized the move. In 2022, he had cautioned, "The idea that we’re going to send in offensive equipment and have planes and tanks and trains going in with American pilots and American crews — just understand, don’t kid yourself, no matter what y’all say, that’s called World War III." When asked in January if he would send F-16s to Ukraine, he responded with a definitive "no," suggesting that such an action could precipitate World War III.
