In a letter penned to Hur on Monday, the Oversight Committee demanded clarification on whether President Biden kept classified documents that pertained to countries associated with Hunter Biden's international business transactions.
The letter stated, "If any of the classified documents mishandled by President Biden involved countries or individuals that had financial dealings with Biden family members or their related companies, the Committee needs access to that information to evaluate whether our national security has been compromised."
The Committee expressed concerns that President Biden may have retained sensitive documents related to specific countries involved in his family's foreign business. The letter further stated, "Further, we seek to understand whether the White House or President Biden’s personal attorneys placed any limitations or scoping restrictions during the interview that would have precluded a line of inquiry regarding evidence (emails, text messages, or witness statements) directly linking Joe Biden to troublesome foreign payments."
The House Oversight Committee has specifically requested a list of countries and individuals mentioned in the classified documents, as well as any terms that could have potentially limited the scope of Hur’s interview with President Biden. The Committee also requested Hur to provide documents related to an interview with White House counsel Dana Remus, if such an interview occurred.
Special counsel Hur is currently investigating President Biden's possession of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center and his residence in Wilmington, Delaware. White House spokesperson Ian Sams confirmed that Hur interviewed President Biden on October 8 and 9 as part of the investigation.
Sams stated, "The voluntary interview was conducted at the White House over two days, Sunday and Monday, and concluded Monday. As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation."
Hur was appointed as special counsel in January by Attorney General Merrick Garland after classified documents were found at President Biden’s think tank and personal residence.
According to a House memo circulated in late September, the Biden family and its associates earned over $24 million from individuals and businesses linked to Ukraine, Russia, China, Romania, and Kazakhstan. This was revealed before the first impeachment inquiry hearing for President Biden.
Following the first hearing, House Oversight subpoenaed Hunter Biden and his uncle and business partner James Biden’s personal and business bank records. House Oversight Chairman James Comer stated that the existing financial information about the Biden family’s foreign business dealings was obtained from suspicious activity reports sent by banks to the Treasury Department.
Hunter Biden’s taxes are currently under investigation by special counsel David Weiss, U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware. Weiss was appointed special counsel in August after Biden’s guilty plea agreement collapsed and two IRS whistleblowers accused the DOJ of giving Hunter Biden special treatment.
Hunter Biden was indicted in September on three federal gun charges, to which he pleaded not guilty at an October 3 arraignment in Delaware.
