Chicago, a sanctuary city, has announced a staggering $538 million budget deficit, with a significant portion of that attributed to the ongoing migrant crisis.

The city's expenses related to caring for new migrants arriving in the city alone account for at least $200 million. Recent estimates suggest that the crisis is projected to cost over $255 million by the end of the year.

Being a sanctuary city means that Chicago prohibits local and state law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. This designation has made the city a target for buses of migrants sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Abbott argues that these cities are encouraging the migrant crisis his state is dealing with. Initially starting with Washington D.C., the buses have also included Chicago and New York City.

"Texas has bused over 35,000 migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities," Abbott stated on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "Over 11,300 to D.C., over 13,300 to NYC, over 6,700 to Chicago, over 2,600 to Philadelphia, over 1,000 to Denver, over 480 to LA."

While officials in these cities have blamed Abbott's bussing for the crisis, it appears that the buses only account for a minority of the migrants they are facing, as many migrants arrive on their own.

New York City, also a sanctuary city, has also faced significant financial issues due to the influx of migrants. Mayor Eric Adams recently warned that the crisis of over 110,000 migrant arrivals in the last year threatens to "destroy" the city. He also cautioned that the financial impact could lead to cuts in services and cost the city $12 billion by 2025.

"We are about to experience a financial tsunami that I don't think the city has ever experienced," Adams expressed. "Every service in this city is going to be impacted, from child services to our seniors to housing. Everything will be impacted."

Adams and other jurisdictions have called for federal assistance, including more funding, expedited work authorizations, and a federal emergency declaration.

Denver, although not technically a sanctuary city, has limited cooperation with ICE and has also suffered financially due to the influx of migrants. The city has seen an increase in migrants, but leaders have yet to solidify a plan on how to continue providing services. Since December, Denver has spent over $23 million. In April, it was reported that the city expected to spend up to $20 million over the next six months, with costs of up to $1,000 per migrant per week.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Los Angeles, another sanctuary city, expressed concerns about her city being the next to face the crisis. Mayor Karen Bass stated, "We live in a city that welcomes immigrants, and so I think we have been able to handle it, but I am fearful that any day, planes could start coming," at an Axios event.

The financial burden faced by sanctuary cities like Chicago, New York City, Denver, and Los Angeles highlights the challenges they encounter in providing services and support to the influx of migrants.

These cities are calling for federal assistance to alleviate the strain on their budgets and ensure the well-being of both long-time residents and newcomers. As the migrant crisis continues, the financial impact on sanctuary cities remains a pressing concern that requires immediate attention and support from the federal government.
