In an unfortunate incident that shocked the community, a six-year-old Virginia girl was severely injured in an unforeseen accident while traveling in a pickup truck on May 17.

Aubrey Scaletta, the young daughter of Virginia State Police Trooper Daniel Scaletta, was playing with a ratchet strap in the car alongside her sister, Grayson, when the belt flung out of an open window and became entangled in the vehicle's drive shaft. The strap, tragically, was also wound around Aubrey, yanking her towards the window with increasing force.

The aftermath was horrifying. The escalating tension of the ratchet strap resulted in the grievous detachment of Aubrey's feet. With emergency services rapidly dispatched, she was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she underwent a grueling six-hour operation to reconnect her feet. The young girl was then placed on a ventilator in the pediatric ICU, revealed a statement from the Virginia State Police Association (VSPA), which has been actively raising funds to support the Scaletta family through this harrowing period.

However, amidst the darkness of this incident, a glimmer of hope has emerged. Aubrey's condition appears to be improving significantly. "Both feet seem to be receiving good blood flow after being reattached, and as of this morning, doctors have taken off the ventilator," reported the VSPA one week post-incident. Lauren Scaletta, Aubrey's mother, shared her relief on social media: "Her little toes look so good."

Despite the promising signs of recovery, the family is aware of the long road ahead. In addition to her injuries, Aubrey's health complications escalated with a collapsed lung and subsequent pneumonia. According to the medical team, she will likely undergo at least 10 to 15 more surgeries over the coming months and years, starting with a skin graft procedure scheduled for June 9.

The Scaletta family takes it one day at a time, bracing for the challenge ahead but hopeful for Aubrey's resilience. "The surgery team's goal is to have her walking with braces, walkers and things by Christmas," Lauren shared, cautiously optimistic about the future. "While we realize these things are not a guarantee, it was nice to hear what could be."

Lauren's pride and admiration for her daughter's courage shine through her words: "Aubrey is one tough cookie and we are following her lead as best we can," she said. "My princess monster is such a warrior."
