In 2016, Kaepernick's kneeling during the national anthem was a controversial move he made in protest against racial injustices in the U.S. According to Fox News, Kaepernick has moved from the playing field to the forefront of social activism since that time. The former San Francisco 49er supports abolishing the police and eliminating prisons. He has also voiced his opinion, comparing the NFL draft to that of a slave auction.
Kaepernick has accused the owners of NFL teams of blackballing him from the league. After settling with the NFL, Kaepernick's two tryouts for scouts resulted in no scoring of a contract with any NFL team. Kaepernick's claim to fame last occurred during the 2013 season when he and the team made it to the Super Bowl.

The former player released a graphic novel that takes readers through his senior year of high school. The novel takes readers through the decision-making process Kaepernick faced when deciding if college football was the path to pursue or if he should take a chance and pursue a career in major league baseball.

Juana Summers of NPR had an interview with Kaepernick on Tuesday. She referenced the book's last page showing him kneeling and asked if he felt the NFL had "changed for the better" since his last outing on a football field in 2017.

Kaepernick said, "I haven't seen any substantial change." "I think there is a lot of work to do on that front. Obviously, not playing and being out of the NFL for six years is an indictment on where they are currently at. So I wouldn't put them at the forefront of goodwill and best of intentions in how they operate."
The NFL announced the contributions to the league's Inspire Change initiative reached $300 million. The league also noted that along with the Players Coalition, 15 grant partnerships to "progress in police-community relations, criminal justice reform, education, and economic advancement" were renewed.

Summers next asked what Kaepernick thought his career would look like if he stayed with the NFL or if leaving gave him a chance to do something better. Kaepernick responded, "No. I think there's this idea out there that those are mutually exclusive, and I don't subscribe to that." "So I think people are multifaceted and multitalented. And ultimately, that's something that - we want to make sure that message is being sent as well. We have the opportunity to move forward and not be pigeonholed into singular elements of ourselves."
