In yesterday's press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed staunch criticism against Florida's controversial policies and their impact on marginalized communities.

Although Jean-Pierre did not comment directly on the travel advisories recently issued by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), she did not shy away from expressing the administration's disapproval of actions by Florida's lawmakers.

Jean-Pierre stated, "So I'm not going to comment on the travel advisory specifically, but I'll say this broadly and where we have been as administration as the White House, we've been outspoken about the impact of misguided policies" in the state.

She further criticized the lawmakers for their efforts against diversity and inclusion, the limitation on teaching black history, and their stance against LGBTQ+ rights, immigrants, educators, and women's reproductive freedom.

In an apparent reference to Florida's administration, Jean-Pierre asserted, "So I will let NAACP, I'll let LULAC speak to their specific specifics of their travel advisories." She went on to underline the administration's commitment to oppose discriminatory policies advanced by state leaders nationwide. She specifically criticized "Republicans, extreme Republicans putting forward these policies, that hurt Americans, that take[s] away their freedom."

The NAACP and LULAC advisories were issued in response to Florida's perceived hostility towards African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. The advisories cautioned prospective travelers about the state's marginalization and devaluation of the contributions and challenges faced by these communities.

In response to these criticisms, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dismissed the advisories as a 'joke.' Despite the complaints, DeSantis, planning to announce his presidential campaign shortly, intends to stand by his record and combat so-called 'woke' policies on a national platform.

DeSantis recently attracted criticism for signing a bill that prevents state colleges and universities from funding diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. He also supported a move to block the Advanced Placement African American Studies course in public schools because it lacked 'educational value.' This decision was met with strong condemnation from the Florida Education Association.

DeSantis has further been at odds with Disney over its diversity statements, a conflict that led to the company's decision to cancel a planned $1 billion campus in Orlando.

Reflecting on Florida's current political climate, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson remarked, "Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals that our union was founded upon."
