Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has warned that if former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 election and pardons some of the January 6, 2021 defendants, as he has suggested he would, an impeachment trial would be necessary.

Blumenthal stated, " violating the American trust by pardoning the January 6th insurrectionist would be itself a betrayal of trust and would warrant an impeachment process.”

He added, "The motives and potential influences on him in pardoning January 6th rioters who literally caused deaths of Capitol policemen I think would be beyond the pale.”

During a Town Hall hosted by CNN on Wednesday, former President Trump was asked by an audience member if he would pardon the January 6th defendants. Trump responded by saying he was “inclined to pardon many of them," adding, "I can't say for every single one of them because a couple of them probably got out of control.”

He also stated, "I will say it will be a large portion of them, and it will be very early on, and they’re living in hell right now. They’re policemen, and they're firemen, and they’re soldiers, and they’re carpenters, and electricians and they’re great people. Many are just great people.”

CNN's Kaitlan Collins followed up by asking the former President of the pardons would include Proud Boys members convicted of seditious conspiracy. Trump responded by saying that “I don’t know. I’ll have to look at their case, but I will say in Washington, D.C., you cannot get a fair trial. You cannot."

Former President Trump is the front runner in the 2024 GOP primary, according to an ABC/Washington Post poll from May 3rd, which showed him a 23-point lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the primary and a seven-point lead over President Joe Biden for the presidency.

Trump's popularity surged in the polls after he was indicted in New York on charges of falsifying business records, which many said was a political prosecution by New York CA Alvin Bragg.
