However, one particular demographic is seeing a drastic increase in people picking up guns for the first time and learning how to use the weapons. This group involves women.
Females are the fastest-growing group of gun owners nationwide. So, now women will start defending themselves as men have for years. According to a survey by Pew Research Center, women are more likely to want guns for protection than their male counterparts.
Fox News reports, “In 2016, 15% of women reported owning a gun, according to Gallup. That figure swelled to 22% last year, the highest level since Gallup started tracking American firearm ownership annually in 2007. Men are still more likely to own a firearm than women, but their rates of gun ownership have remained stagnant — around 40% — over the last decade and a half.”

The 7% jump is the most significant increase this female gun-owner demographic has seen. These women tend to seek instructions on properly using a firearm.
Instructor Jane Milhans serves on the Washington State Rifle and Pistol Association board. She devotes around 100 hours yearly to showing other women how to use a firearm. She teaches a beginner class ideal for anyone just learning to shoot or scared of guns. Students take a class and can ask questions before going to the shooting range.

One student in the class, McCoy, said that men view women as sitting ducks. She says this is our way of saying no, we’re not. McCoy is married to an officer and feels safe when he is home. However, when he heads to work, she worries.
As women, we don’t have as much chance against larger or stronger men, especially if there is more than one. That’s why it is handy for us to have guns for protection.
