Left-wing protesters disrupted proceedings in the state House of Representatives of Montana, leading to the dispatch of riot police to the state Capitol on Monday.

The demonstrators were rallying in support of Zooey Zephyr, a Democrat who is the first transgender lawmaker in Montana's legislative history. Zephyr was censured by the body last week, which led to protests in the observation gallery of the House chamber.

Multiple reports indicate that the group was dispersed by police units from the Montana Highway Patrol and the Lewis and Clark County sheriff's office, resulting in an unknown number of arrests. The protesters, chanting "Let her speak!" for almost half an hour, were attempting to end the censure against Zephyr.

The censure came after Zephyr's remarks during a House floor debate on amendments to Senate Bill 99, which seeks to prohibit sex change treatment for minors.

Zephyr had told Republicans that they have "blood on (their) hands" and hoped this notion would be present in their prayers, stating, "The only thing I will say, is if you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands," referencing the body's opening prayer.

On Thursday, the House voted in favor of Zephyr's censure, citing "hate-filled testimony." Zephyr responded to the censure by asserting her commitment to standing up for the rights of the transgender community, stating, "I want to be clear: no amount of silencing tactics will deter me from standing up for the rights of the transgender community. I will not apologize for speaking with clarity and precision about the harm these bills cause. Montana Republicans say they want an apology, but what they really want is silence as they take away the rights of trans and queer Montanans."

The use of riot police in response to the protest highlights the growing tension between progressive and conservative viewpoints in Montana. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respectful dialogue and peaceful protest, as well as the need for lawmakers to approach sensitive issues with care and consideration.
