At a Tuesday Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas agreed with President Joe Biden's stance on banning assault weapons in the U.S. but could not provide a definition of the term.

Kennedy asked Mayorkas what an assault weapon is, and Myorkas responded with the example of an AK-47.

When pressed by Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana to clarify what an assault weapon is aside from pointing to a specific weapon, Mayorkas said that when he was a federal prosecutor, most law enforcement leaders he worked with supported the assault weapons ban.

At that point, Kennedy expressed his frustration asking Mayorkas if he understood, "why we get so frustrated with you? Because you won't give straight answers."

"I think I just did," Mayorkas responded. "No you didn't," Kennedy answered and asked Mayorkas again for the definition of an assault weapon and not an example of one.

Mayorkas stated that he is confident a technical definition was used in connection with the previous assault weapons ban.

Last year, the House passed the "Assault Weapons Ban of 2022," which Biden supported, but the measure never reached his desk. Kennedy, who has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 2017, has been an outspoken critic of the proposed ban.
