One expert on carrying out the death penalty says that the fact that Idaho is bringing back the firing squad makes sense as one of the speediest and most effective execution methods around.

Fox News reports that Idaho is looking to reintroduce the firing squad as the state has run into a shortage of the drugs necessary for lethal injection.

A piece of legislation currently pushed in the state could be signed by the Governor and might impact the eight people on death row in Idaho. It could also have an impact on Bryan Kohberger if he were to be found guilty and sentenced to death. He is the suspect in the quadruple murder of four University of Idaho students in November 2022.

Fordham Law School professor Deborah Denno, a leading expert on the death penalty, stated the following:

“The firing squad is the quickest, surest, [and] most error-free and the only technique for which we have skilled and trained professionals.”

Denno has studied lethal injection methods for years and stated that the injection procedures in Idaho and throughout the country are sorry. This option was first put on the table in the 1980s, but the availability of the drugs necessary to carry out lethal injection has become much more complicated.

The professor told Fox News Digital:

“Within the past few years, we’ve had three people [survive] lethal injection executions when they were supposed to die,” and “This is after over two hours of people trying to kill them and the state [basically] saying, ‘You’ve got to stop.’”

There are also situations when trying to carry out the lethal injection process does not go exactly as scripted. That can be a problem as well because it can mean that some condemned to death are not able to receive the drugs in the manner that they are supposed to, according to the procedures set up for this type of thing.

Another thing that some have pointed out is that the lethal injection process is shrouded in mystery. However, it is far more transparent when using the firing squad method.

Denno supports the bill moving through Idaho at this time. However, she backs the idea of allowing death row inmates to choose between lethal injection and the firing squad as their method of execution.
